A subject I've only touched on briefly is the vermicomposting Nadine has going in the basement. This actually got it's start in the middle of the fall last year by our daughter at her schools Garden Club. Se was sent home with a small ice cream pale with a few worms in it. Since I had been kicking the idea around for a full garden this year we discussed getting a few more works and having a go at it. Nadine dug around on the "tubes" and found this design and went for it.
It certainly isn't pretty. But the worms seem to be doing well, and reproducing.

this looks sooo gross
ReplyDeleteWow. I have heard of this via someone who was teaching it at school. She was quite passionate about it and she was not a tree hugger. Never though to do it. Nothing warm enough in our house to do it. Two questions. Why does it look like the worms are trying to escape? What does it look like now, 3 weeks later?
ReplyDeleteI think they may have been trying to escape at the time. I will try to get a few new pictures up today of how it looks now. We've added more covering on top of the food to try to keep the mold down, and when I was in there a few days back I didn't see any worms out of the compost at that point. I nervously dug down to try to find them, and they were all about 1/2 in below the surface, looking busy and happier than ever.
